We are happy to announce that our sweet Hank is cancer-free after battling a Mast Cell Tumor on his front left leg for the last two months. All thanks to just one treatment of an FDA-approved local treatment called STELFONTA® by Virbac.

What is a Mast Cell Tumor? Mast cell tumors are a common form of skin cancer that affects a part of the body’s immune system known as mast cells. They are the most common type of skin tumor in dogs, accounting for roughly 20% of all skin cancers. Although mast cell tumors may affect any dog, the risk for developing them is higher in older dogs and dogs of certain breeds (including Boxers, Shar-Peis, and Golden Retrievers).

How does STELFONTA® work? STELFONTA® is given as an injection, directly into your dog’s tumor. It destroys the tumor by breaking down cancer cells and starving their blood supply,
leaving behind a “pocket” or wound at the injection site where the tumor once was. Wounds are then left open, allowing STELFONTA® to promote wound healing.

Before STELFONTA®, we would have had to consider limb amputation or a series of Stereotactic Radiation treatments. As with any cancer, the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances that treatment will be successful. If you have an appointment to discuss radiation therapy for your pet’s mast cell tumor make sure to ask if they are a good candidate for STELFONTA®. If your vet does not offer this treatment, please give our office a call!
